Research: Where Do You Do Yours?

I have recently visited a blog, the writers all share where they do their research and get their information from for their novels various.
One went to Egypt as she was writing about the time period of Cleopatra and wanted to 'feel' the country.
Another went to Greenland, brrr so she could capture the feeling of 'cold'. One writer spent a week working in with a magazine editor and publisher, as this was in keeping with her WIP.

Me? I really cannot go back in time, (as much as I would love to), my novel is set in late Victorian London. The ambiance, sounds and smells are no longer there, not the ones I want to portray. The sounds of horses no longer exist, it is all cars and fumes of a different kind. I am having to take my imagination to the limits and beyond. I cannot go anywhere to research, I cannot afford it for a start.

I use books I find here in Cyprus, rare finds like A Victorian Village and Life in the Victorian Age. These two books got me singing with joy, I was like a child with a HUGE bag of sweets(candy).

Have you ever travelled for research? Where do you do yours?

PS: Chalet Publishers is giving away free e-copies of their new novel COMING TOGETHER - A story of love and intrigue in Rio! If you want a copy pop over to Nadine Laman's blog, she has the details there.

Thanks for your comment Glynis, I hope you like this site it's full of good stuff. I decided my Allergy post was a bit too personal for a blog-it was really me being annoyed at the so called health service here-they get worse all the time!

Oh how I envy those writers who up and go to Egypt, Cambodia, Japan for research purposes. I'm using my future writing success as an excuse for future travel! I figure then I can write it off as work related expenses :)

Good luck with your research!
Jen

Because I write contemporary, I don't have to do too much research, and most of what I need I can find on the internet.

I usually use books (local library to the rescue) and the Internet to do research, but when I wrote my first novel I did go back to Italy and took notes and lots of photos. I was visiting family, but boy-oh-boy was I inspired walking through my beloved Rome!

Hi Anita, I have commented back at your blog, thanks for dropping in today.
Jen, me too! I will wait until I am rich with the first novel, then plan my research trip.;0

Hi lazy whoops...Susan! *grin*, I rely on the Internet as I have no access to a library.

Ah Laura, my daughter honeymooned there this year and fell in love with Italy. Visiting family would have been great for me to visit London, but the two weddings made it impossible. Thanks for popping in and commenting.
