Writing Smyles

Why am I wearing a smile on my face?

A publisher has expressed interest in Ripper, My Love. They are a small press and this is outside of their usual publishing style. After reading through 8 pages as a favour to me, the owner emailed the words "would like to consider". I had most certainly not expected that reply. I cannot tell you what it has done to my confidence. I have told her I still want the challenge of chasing an agent and she is happy with that, she realises it is part of my plan. Time and patience-fortunately I have both. I will keep you updated.

I was sent an interesting link today. It is to an article 15 Famous Authors With Surprising College Majors. It got me thinking about my educational background and my writing career.
I have a nursing degree, I am a retired Weight Watchers leader, I owned 2 pharmacies, have certificates for allsorts there and was a leader for playgroup and pre-school toddler groups. I ran my own dance school and many more things over the years. During all of those events in my life I realise the writer in me was there; deep inside. I was the only one who loved to write up the minutes, to make fliers, to create articles with silly poems in them. Others would 'volunteer' me for anything connected with writing, should I not be at a meeting. They knew it wouldn't bother me at all.
My nursing notes were essays, and my essays gained me high marks.
However, I never considered myself a writer until I finished a small writing course, got paid for published articles in a nursing magazine and finished my novel. Yet the writer has always been there, she was hidden from me, but it appears not from others. DH bought me a new laptop (mwah), and while the chap was asking what specification I wanted and what was I going to use it for, DH said "She is a writer and needs writing software and reliabilty". I was astounded, it flowed from his mouth so naturally, he sounded so proud.
A turning point for me. No degree, certificate or college education for creative writing got me here. Only a love of the art of words on paper (or screen). To be acknowledged as a writer, I do not have to be published, I just have to show the world I love writing.

That's great, Glynis! And good to know your husband is behind you. Don't worry - I have no degree or background in writing either.

Congratulations on the interest in RIPPER, MY LOVE. Best of luck.

I received that same email and haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but it did peak my interest.

Amen, Glynis. No writing degree here, either. I did go back to school while writing my memoir, though, and took every Creative Writing course the university had to offer. And thanks for your kind comments on my blog today. Blown away? Really?

Karen, your memoir is touching. It is a sad story but very well written. You have portrayed emotions brilliantly.
Thank you for your support and kind words.

Stephen, thanks. I have a long road ahead but there is a little light on at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you for taking time out for me today.

Your husband sounds wonderful. The aromatic flowers you live among sound wonderful. The setting of your home is awesome. You have done amazing things in your life. I can relate to the nursing! I don't have an official license, but....24+ years of caregiving does it. You are a writer because you write poetry and books; you have WRITTEN a novel. How right you are that you love writing and that is enough!

That is really cool... I hope one day we can all get to read Ripper, My Love in glorious leather bound hard back!

I understand your need to write. I was asked the other day (seriously) whether I was on the autistic spectrum because of my compulsion to write! I din't know whether to be pleased or offended (for either myself or those with autism) to be frank!

But congrats, 'RJ like this' as they say on Facebook! I love it when friends do well... gives me a little shiver of delight. What is the opposite of schadenfreude, incidentally?

no official writing background here either, my degree is in archaeology, so go figure....

great news on the publisher's interest, glynis, and how lovely you've such a supportive spouse ;-)

That is exciting! Congratulations. I think writing is one of the few professions you can have without an actual degree in the subject matter. The primary requirement is a love of reading and writing.

Ann, you are the best kind of nurse there could ever be. No certificate could make you any better! I had two loves in my life, nursing and writing. Nursing took over and until I had stopped, I had never realised quite how powerful my love of writing was. Thanks for visiting me today.

RJ, I have only envisiged it in paperback, thanks for your imagination. :) Alturism? Is that close to the opposite of enjoying the misery of others? (I think that is the term for schadenfreude).

Thanks for having the shivers for me. :)

Amanda, I am very lucky with DH he has supported me all the way. Thanks for visiting today.

Jane, the love takes over and not one certificate would ever change what's inside a writer's heart. I so agree.
Thanks for taking time out for me today.

Way to go Glynis. I am so glad you received a response which boosted your confidence. I think writing is not something one can learn (although, of course, it can be perfected) but true writing comes from the heart.

Glynis said...

Yes he is a good one Talli, thanks for the happy dance :)

Loree I so agree with you, it comes from the heart. Thanks for your support. :)
