Cyprus Tragedy: This Blog Will Be Off-line For a Few Days

In view of the recent explosion here in Cyprus, this blog will be off-line. People lost their lives because of  what appears to be a stupid decision to store explosives near a major power plant in 2009. The years and heat have taken their toll and this morning it all exploded. Allegedly last week the defence ministry was informed the containers were overheating and nothing was done. There will be a three day mourning period enforced in honour of the dead. They will have a state funeral.  http://www.cyprusweekly.com.cy/main/92,1,283,0,21209-CYPRUS.aspx

We are only having power at intervals and it seems unfair to waste electricty when folk are without it. Our water supply is going to be affected and we are drinking bottled. It is the hottest time of the year so far, but we will not use our A/C. If we can preserve energy then they can work faster using theirs to repair and clear damage.

Our thoughts are with those families who have lost loved ones.

Hi Glynis .. just looked and it appears terrible and obvious the effect on everyone is rather a shock.

I hope they can sort it .. look after yourselves and the animals ..

With thoughts and for the families of the dead .. Hilary

So much, lately, it seems that people's weaknesses and oversights are responsible for a lot of the disasters. I second Hilary in saying take care of yourselves and your animals. My prayers and my daughter's are with you, too.

That's horrible, Glynis. I hope there's some kind of investigation into this so it doesn't happen again. Take care of yourself.

Turns out you were my Cyprus news source for today. In America it's all about an unjust trial.

How sad what happened in your country & I hope that you will be back very soon.

Glynis, I hadn't heard anything about this until I saw your FB post! I"ll go read the articles now…our thoughts are with you and I remember how hot you said it was there right now. Save your energy and attention for the most immediate concerns. We are thinking of you and yours.

Hi Glynis .. nothing on the 6.00 pm BBC news .. too many other things - Murdoch (hacking, Sky tv takeover etc lots), famine in Somalia, and the Volga boat sinking with children on board ..

Channel 4 News which I prefer to watch - better and more in depth .. similar, but it lasts an hour and we had a brief piece on the head of the army and the port had both resigned, as the head of the Navy had been killed in the blast ..

Not an easy time for the island .. Hilary

Thank you all. We are on two hourly switch offs at the moment. It is expected to last a year. Once they settle into a proper routine, I will be able to blog without suddenly going off-line in the middle of writing!
